AI Call Cutting Mid-Way? Find the Reason and Fix It, Step by Step
When an AI call is cutting mid-way, first open the call in Call Logs and read its End Reason. max_duration means the agent's Max Call Duration is too short — raise it (5 minutes suits most calls). silence_timeout means the caller was quiet for longer than the Silence Timeout — keep it at 15–20 seconds and make the script easy to answer. completed means the script or the caller ended the call. A call marked No conversation dropped before the agent spoke — check that the number is a 10-digit Indian number. These calls are not charged.
An AI voice agent should end a call only when the conversation is really over. If your calls end early, the reason is almost always one of four things: a time limit set too low, the caller going quiet, the script telling the agent to stop, or a number that cannot be reached properly. This guide shows how to find which one it is in two minutes, and what every advanced setting of a TaskVox agent does, so you can fix it yourself.
Step 1: read the End Reason of the call
Go to Call Logs, open a call that ended early, and look at End Reason in the call details. Also note the call's duration and the last few lines of the transcript.
| End Reason | What happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
max_duration | The call reached the agent's Max Call Duration and was ended. | Raise Max Call Duration (Step 2). |
silence_timeout | The caller said nothing for longer than the Silence Timeout. | Check the last lines of the transcript (Step 3). |
completed | The agent ended the call — the script told it to, or the caller said goodbye. | Check when your script ends the call (Step 4). |
bye_received | The call was hung up from the caller's side. | Nothing to fix in settings; see Step 6 if it happens early in many calls. |
| Status: No conversation | Picked up, but dropped before the agent spoke. Not charged. | Check the number format (Step 5). |
Step 2: the call always cuts at the same time — Max Call Duration
If many calls end at exactly the same length — one minute, two minutes — and the End Reason is max_duration, the agent is hitting its time limit. Open the agent, then Advanced Settings → Max Call Duration (minutes). It can be set from 3 to 60 minutes; 5 minutes is a good value for sales, follow-up and qualification calls. A short limit does not save money: you are billed for the minutes actually used, and a call cut just before the customer gives their number is a lost lead.
Step 3: the caller went quiet — Silence Timeout
Silence Timeout is the number of seconds the agent waits for the caller to speak after the agent finishes talking. Part-way through that time the agent checks once — "Are you still there?" (in Hindi, "क्या आप सुन पा रहे हैं?"). If the caller still says nothing when the time is up, the agent ends the call. It can be set from 5 to 120 seconds.
- 15–20 seconds works for most sales and follow-up calls.
- 25–30 seconds if callers often need time — to find a document, check with family, or read out a number.
- Too short (5–8 seconds) cuts people who are thinking. Too long keeps a silent line open after the person has already gone, and calls are billed per started minute.
Now read the last lines of the transcript. If the agent asked a long or confusing question and the caller went quiet, the fix is in the script, not the timer: ask one short question at a time, and make sure the caller knows who is calling and why (Step 4).
Step 4: the agent ended the call itself — check the script
An End Reason of completed means the agent decided the conversation was over. That is right when the caller said goodbye or the script reached its closing line. It is a problem only if it happens too early. Check your script for these:
- Clear end rules. Write exactly when to end: "If the customer is not interested, say 'No problem, thank you' and end the call." and "After saying thank you and goodbye, end the call." Then the agent ends cleanly instead of waiting in silence.
- Introduce yourself first. An opening that only asks a question ("Looking for a property?") makes people ask "Who is this?" and hang up. Say your name, company and reason for calling in the first line.
- One question at a time. Short, polite questions keep people talking. Keep Max Words per Response around 30.
- Phone numbers in parts. People often say a number in pieces or as "double five". The agent is instructed to add the pieces up and to read back only a complete 10-digit number before confirming — you can add the same rule to your script.
Step 5: picked up and dropped at once — the number
When a call is picked up and drops before the agent says anything, Call Logs shows No conversation and you are not charged. The usual cause is the number itself. Upload 10-digit Indian numbers (for example 9876543210); +91 or a leading 0 is removed automatically. Numbers that cannot be Indian numbers — foreign numbers, or numbers with a digit missing or extra — are shown in the campaign's Wrong numbers card with the reason and how to correct them, and they are not called.
Step 6: everything looks right — the caller's network
Some calls end because the person's phone lost coverage or they hung up. If only a few calls end early and the transcripts look normal, that is ordinary. Calls that were not answered are retried automatically during the campaign, and you can run another retry round for the rest from the campaign page.
Every advanced setting, explained
Open an agent and expand Advanced Settings. Here is what each one does and a safe starting value.
| Setting | What it does | Range | Good starting value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max Words per Response | The longest reply the agent gives in one turn. Shorter replies sound more natural and leave room for the caller. | 10–200 | 30 |
| Max Concurrent Channels | How many calls this agent can be on at the same time during a campaign. | 1–50 | Start low, raise as your campaign grows |
| Silence Timeout (seconds) | How long the agent waits for the caller to speak after it finishes talking, before checking once and then ending the call. | 5–120 | 15–20 |
| Max Call Duration (minutes) | The longest a call can last. The call is ended at this time. | 3–60 | 5 |
| Allow language switching | On: if the caller asks to talk in another language, the agent switches. Off: the agent always stays in its own language. | On / Off | On for Hindi and English; Off if you want one language only |
| Reply only in the language's own script | Makes the agent write replies in the language's own script (Hindi in Devanagari), which the voice reads clearly. Turn it off if you want some English words, like "BHK" or "EMI", kept in English. | On / Off | Off, unless replies come out in Roman Hindi |
| Enable transfer to human agent | When the caller asks for a person, the agent says your transfer message and connects the call to your team's number. | On / Off + number + message | On if someone can take calls during calling hours |
Outside Advanced Settings, three more parts shape every call: the First Message (what the agent says when the call connects), the Qualification Fields (the details the agent should capture, such as name, phone and budget, which appear on the Leads page) and the optional Lead Scoring Criteria (what Hot, Warm and Cold mean for your business).
A quick checklist before your next campaign
- Max Call Duration is 5 minutes (at least 3).
- Silence Timeout is 15–20 seconds (25–30 if callers need time).
- The first line says who is calling and why.
- The script says when to end the call, after a polite goodbye.
- Numbers are 10-digit Indian numbers, and the Wrong numbers card is empty.
- Make one test call from the agent page and read its End Reason and transcript.
What it costs
TaskVox charges only for answered calls, per started minute — ₹2–₹4 per minute with the phone call included and no monthly fee. Calls that are not answered or drop before the agent speaks are free. See the rate card and calculator.
AI call cutting mid-way — frequently asked questions
Why does my AI call cut after exactly one minute?
The agent's Max Call Duration is ending the call. Open the call in Call Logs: if the End Reason is max_duration, open the agent, go to Advanced Settings and raise Max Call Duration. It can be 3 to 60 minutes; 5 minutes suits most sales calls.
What is Silence Timeout?
Silence Timeout is how many seconds the agent waits for the caller to speak after it finishes talking. Part-way through, the agent asks "Are you still there?"; if the caller still says nothing when the time is up, the agent ends the call. You can set it from 5 to 120 seconds.
What Silence Timeout should I use?
For most sales and follow-up calls, 15 to 20 seconds. Use 25 to 30 seconds if callers often need time — for example to find a document or read out a number. Very long values keep a silent line open after the person has gone, and calls are billed per started minute.
The call picked up and dropped in a second. Is it a setting?
Usually not. Calls that are picked up and dropped before the agent speaks are marked "No conversation" in Call Logs and are not charged. The most common reason is the number format: use 10-digit Indian numbers. +91 or a leading 0 is removed automatically, and numbers that are not valid Indian numbers are listed in the campaign's "Wrong numbers" card and are not called.
How do I make the agent end the call after the last line?
Write it in the script, after the closing line: for example "After saying thank you and goodbye, end the call." The agent also ends the call when the caller says goodbye.
Am I charged when a call is cut?
You are charged only for answered calls, per started minute. Calls that are not answered, or that drop before the agent speaks, are free.
Can the agent transfer the call to my team instead of hanging up?
Yes. Turn on "Enable transfer to human agent" in Advanced Settings and add your team's phone number and the line the agent says before transferring. When the caller asks for a person, the agent transfers the call.
